Retrospective coding in symbolic delayed matching: In retrospective (or "backward-looking" coding), the organism remembers properties of the sample stimulus (in the example shown, remembers the color of the sample).  If still active at the time of testing, the code, in combination with the learned rules of the matching task, can generate correct choice.
