This is an example of the successive same/different task used to train pigeons. A series of "icons" will be displayed. You must click on each icon (the equivalent of the bird's peck) before the next icon will be presented. When 16 icons have been displayed, red and green choice buttons will be displayed - click on one and you will be told whether you are correct.

This program differs in small ways from the one used in our experiments. In the actual pigeon studies:

  • when a pigeon chose correctly, they received a food reinforcer
  • when a pigeon chose the wrong key, the chamber was darkened and it was required to repeat the same trial (only the first trial was scored, though)
  • the last icon in the list remained on the screen and the screen colors reversed (to white on a black background) until a choice was made.
  • the real experiment used block randomization
NOTE: I have noticed that the first few icons usually flicker on the first trial as it loads the pictures in the background. This degree of flicker is a function of the speed of your machine and the speed of your connection. After the first trial, icons are displayed normally. If you encounter problems or wish to provide feedback, please
